About this range

Air Compressors at Pomphrey

Compressed air is the one service a workshop cannot work without, and the compressor is usually the last thing anybody specifies properly. The range runs from single-stage receiver-mounted piston machines for a one-bay unit, through two-stage piston compressors built for continuous duty, to rotary screw compressors with integrated dryers for a floor running several tools at once.

The choice is mostly about duty cycle. A piston compressor is cheaper to buy and perfectly happy running intermittently — a tyre bay, a general service bay, a bodyshop with one or two air tools. A screw compressor is built to run continuously, delivers air at a steadier pressure and is far quieter, which matters when it lives in the same building as the people. Where the air is going into paint, gauges or measuring equipment, a dryer stops being optional.

ABAC, Magnum, MSM and FIAC run through the range, with portable and petrol-driven units for work away from a supply. We size them against the air the tools actually consume rather than the badge on the tank, install and commission them, and service them afterwards — ours and anybody else's.

What we do for this equipment

The same company that supplies it keeps it working. These service lines apply to everything on this page.

Before you ring

Air Compressors — questions we get asked

Piston or screw — which do I need?

Duty cycle decides it. A piston compressor is built to run intermittently, so it suits a bay using air in bursts — a tyre machine, an impact gun, a blow gun. A screw compressor is built to run continuously, holds pressure steadier and is much quieter, which is what you want when several people are drawing air all day or when the compressor lives in the same room as the work.

What size compressor do I actually need?

Size it on the air the tools consume, not on the tank. Add up the consumption of the tools likely to be running at the same time, allow headroom, and check the pressure they need. A big receiver on a small pump will feel fine for a minute and then run out. Tell us what is in the workshop and we will work it out with you.

Do I need a dryer?

If the air goes anywhere near paint, gauges, measuring equipment or air tools you want to last, yes. Compressed air carries water, and water ruins finishes, corrodes lines and washes the oil out of tools. Screw compressors are commonly supplied with a dryer integrated.

Do you install them, or is it delivery only?

We install and commission what we supply, and we service and repair compressors afterwards — including machines we did not sell.
