Battery Chargers at Pomphrey

Bench and trolley battery chargers and road-start units for a workshop that has vehicles standing.

Charging has changed more than most people notice. Modern vehicles with stop-start carry AGM or EFB batteries that a plain transformer charger will damage rather than fill, and anything with a battery management system needs a supply held steady while the ignition is on and modules are awake. A charger that was fine on a fleet of diesels ten years ago is now capable of doing real harm.

A road-start unit is the other half of it — the thing that gets a flat vehicle off the ramp and out of the bay without jump leads and guesswork. Between the two, most workshops need one of each rather than one of either. Tell us what comes through the door and we will tell you which.

Battery Chargers — questions we get asked

Will an old charger damage a modern battery?

It can. Stop-start vehicles carry AGM or EFB batteries with a charging profile a plain transformer charger does not follow, and forcing it shortens the battery rather than filling it.

What is a support unit for?

Holding the supply steady while the ignition is on and modules are awake — coding, diagnostics and long jobs on the ramp. A dropping voltage during that is how faults get invented.

Charger or road-start unit?

They do different jobs. A charger fills a battery over time; a road-start gets a flat vehicle off the ramp and out of the bay now. Most workshops want one of each.

Which one suits my workshop?

Tell us what comes through the door — the mix of vehicles decides it more than anything else.
