About this range

Air Tools at Pomphrey

Pneumatic tools are what a workshop runs on: impact wrenches, ratchets, drills, air hammers, shears, nibblers, saws, sanders, polishers and grinders. Most of what we carry is Chicago Pneumatic, which is what the trade reaches for and what our own engineers work with, and it is the make we hold parts for.

The size that matters is not the tool, it is the air behind it. A half-inch impact wrench will run off a modest piston compressor; a three-quarter-inch gun, a die grinder or a sander will empty a small receiver in seconds and then run at half its rated torque while the motor catches up. If tools are underperforming, the compressor and the pipework are the first place to look, and we would rather tell you that than sell you another wrench.

Everything on this page is repairable. Air tools are simple machines — vanes, bearings, seals and a rotor — and a tool that has lost its punch usually wants a service kit rather than replacing. They come to the bench at Kingsland Road, get stripped, rebuilt and go back working. We do that for the makes we sell and for most of the makes we do not.

What we do for this equipment

The same company that supplies it keeps it working. These service lines apply to everything on this page.

Before you ring

Air Tools — questions we get asked

What compressor do I need to run these?

More than most people expect. A half-inch impact wrench used in short bursts is undemanding; a three-quarter-inch gun, a die grinder or a sander runs continuously and will flatten a small compressor. If tools feel gutless, the usual culprit is air supply or pipework rather than the tool. See our air compressors.

Can air tools be repaired, or is it cheaper to replace them?

Almost always repaired. An air tool is vanes, bearings, seals and a rotor, and a tool that has lost power usually needs a service kit rather than replacing. They come to the bench at Kingsland Road, get stripped and rebuilt, and go back working. See tool repairs.

Do you repair makes you did not supply?

Yes. We hold parts for the Chicago Pneumatic range we carry and we repair most other makes that turn up.

Half-inch or three-quarter-inch impact wrench?

Half-inch covers wheels and most general work and is lighter to hold all day. Three-quarter-inch is for commercial wheels, suspension and anything seized. If you are buying one gun for a car workshop it is almost always the half-inch.
