About this range

Welders at Pomphrey

MIG welding plant and the protective equipment that has to go with it, for workshops doing their own fabrication and repair.

MIG is the process most garages want: quick to learn, tidy enough for panel work, and happy on the mild steel and box section that makes up most workshop welding. What decides the machine is duty cycle and the thickness you are working on — a set that will run all afternoon on chassis sections is a different machine from one that tacks a bracket twice a week.

Protection is not an accessory. An auto-darkening helmet, gauntlets and a screen between the welder and everybody else in the bay is the minimum, and it is far cheaper than the alternative. If you are welding on a vehicle, disconnecting the battery and getting the earth clamp close to the work will save you an electronics bill nobody wants.

Welders — questions we get asked

Why MIG for a garage?

It is quick to learn, tidy enough for panel work and happy on the mild steel and box section that makes up most workshop welding.

What decides which set I need?

Duty cycle and material thickness. A machine that will run all afternoon on chassis sections is a different machine from one that tacks a bracket twice a week, and buying the second for the first job is a false economy.

What protection do I need?

An auto-darkening helmet, gauntlets and a screen between the welder and everybody else in the bay, as a minimum. It is far cheaper than the alternative.

Anything to watch when welding on a vehicle?

Disconnect the battery and get the earth clamp as close to the work as you can. Welding current finding its way back through the loom is an electronics bill nobody wants.
