About this range

Torque Wrenches at Pomphrey

Norbar torque wrenches through the Pro, Industrial and NorTorque ranges, from small click wrenches up to the heavy end, with torque multipliers where the figure is beyond what a person can reasonably pull.

A torque wrench is a measuring instrument that happens to look like a hand tool, and it is the only tool in the workshop that goes out of specification silently. It will keep clicking long after it has stopped clicking at the right number. Dropping one, storing it wound up, or simply using it for a few years will drift it, and nothing about the tool tells you so.

That is why calibration sits alongside this range rather than as an afterthought. We calibrate on our own bench at Kingsland Road and issue the certificate with it, for wrenches we supplied and for wrenches we did not. If you are signing off wheel torques, cambelts, head bolts or anything an inspector or a warranty claim might later ask about, the certificate is the part that matters.

Before you ring

Torque Wrenches — questions we get asked

How often should a torque wrench be calibrated?

It depends on how hard it works, but the important point is that a wrench gives you no warning. It keeps clicking long after it has stopped clicking at the right figure. If yours has been dropped, stored wound up, or simply used for a few years without a check, treat the reading as an opinion.

Do you calibrate wrenches you did not sell?

Yes. We calibrate on our own bench at Kingsland Road and issue the certificate with it, whoever supplied the wrench — see calibration services.

What is a torque multiplier for?

For figures beyond what a person can reasonably pull by hand — commercial wheel nuts, heavy suspension and driveline work. It gears the input up so the figure is reached accurately rather than by leaning on a bar.

Should a torque wrench be stored on its lowest setting?

Wound back, yes, on a click wrench — leaving the spring compressed is one of the quickest ways to drift one out of specification.
